With an aim to supporting the regions film makers, Arts Waikato has joined forces with Hamilton Film Society to relaunch the Film-Makers Network Night. Each second Monday of the month, the evening will have speakers and networking with local film makers and national industry bodies and a special treat for Film Society members with the showing of a local short film as the preview to the main event.
The first of the Film-Makers Network nights is Monday 14th March at the Lido Cinema. The first offering as guest speaker is Greg Page (6:30pm), with little angry man Decaff (8pm) following in his stride.
Ex Hamiltonian Greg Page is one of New Zealand's foremost writer/directors. He has helmed a slew of music videos and television commercials and he has achieved critical recognition and international festival exposure for his innovative short films and feature film ‘The Locals’. For his sins, the latest feather in his cap is the competitive co-hosting on TV3’s new show Bigger, Better, Faster, Stronger. In the show James Coleman and Greg Page take everyday household items, look closely at the science involved in their inner workings, then set about re-modelling them to solve problems created by their inherent limitations.
Short film “Decaff” (1995) is effectively four shorts in one, starring Pagey’s creation Decaff - a claymation character who represents "the bad-tempered little knot we all have inside." Decaff originally debuted in two short videos. Funded by grants and a student loan, this 35mm film adds two new stories to remakes of the originals. Decaff made a strong impact on the short film scene, gained a cult audience and the character co-hosted TV show Short Cuts, a showcase for Kiwi shorts.
Come along, from 6pm the bar will be open and nibbles available. 6:30pm speaker, followed by networking through until 8pm screening as the short before Hamilton Film Society's main event – “The New World” (USA 2005 - Terence Malick) visit http://www.nzfilmsociety.org.nz/new_world.htm for more info on the film. The New World is the second showing for the Hamilton Film Society and is one of more than 30 films from around the world screened throughout the year by the Hamilton Film Society.
